Sergio Lazzarotto
Sergio Lazzarotto is a graduate electrical engineer with over three decades of leadership at the forefront of Smart City, connectivity, and innovation ecosystems. Throughout his career, he has repeatedly anticipated technology shifts and highly contributed to transform them into globally adopted standards.
He was a key architect and driving force behind the creation of the USB standard and, later, the Wibree wireless protocol—subsequently adopted as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) by the BT SIG—a technology that has since become a cornerstone of how billions of consumer electronics and industrial devices interconnect. His contributions to the PC industry include delivering breakthrough innovations in wireless peripherals, redefining how users interact with computers, and securing several foundational patents still in use today.
In 2019, Sergio was appointed President & Executive Director of the DLMS User Association (DLMS UA), where he leads an international community of members to create world-leading specifications and certification programs. Under his stewardship, DLMS UA advances interoperability, security, and reliability for smart meters and connected devices at the edge across strategic infrastructure sectors—electricity, water, gas, and heat—ensuring trusted and future-proof data exchange in a rapidly evolving digital energy landscape. In parallel, Sergio serves as an expert in the EU Smart Energy Expert Group, contributing to European policy and regulatory frameworks that align innovation with real-world energy transition goals.
