Roberto GARAY MARTINEZ (Bilbao, 1984), Industrial Engineer from the Higher School of Engineering of Bilbao (UPV-EHU, 2008) and PhD in Engineering from the University of Lleida (2017). I have been a building energy researcher since 2008. I am currently Principal Investigator at the Deusto Sustainable Research Group at the University of Deusto. Previously (2008–2022), I carried out my work at Tecnalia. Throughout my career, I have participated in the conceptualization, development, and experimentation of energy systems and thermal insulation systems in buildings. I began my career as an energy analyst, creating dynamic models of energy systems and conducting heat transfer analyses using finite element calculations. Later, I devoted much of my work to experimental activities at the KUBIK by Tecnalia facility. In recent years, my work has been a mix of all the above. From 2015 to 2022, I served as Technology Leader in Building Physics and Project Manager in the Energy, Climate and Urban Transition Division at Tecnalia. Among other responsibilities, I was the coordinator of the RELaTED project, which focused on the development of low-temperature district heating systems based on renewable energy sources. As a result, I have interests in a variety of areas, such as the optimization of heat transfer in thermal insulation solutions; the improvement of performance in building-integrated solar systems; and the alignment of decarbonization policies with energy systems. In recent years, I’ve developed a strong interest in data-driven energy analysis processes, building model calibration, and their potential applications in the field of Measurement and Verification of energy performance/savings through energy management platforms. Over the course of my career, I have witnessed major changes in building energy systems, including the implementation and progressive development of building energy codes, the widespread adoption of ventilation technologies, heat recovery systems, heat pumps, solar technologies, and more. I’ve also seen the rapid digitalization and the massive integration of data analytics processes. And I’m curious to see what comes next.
