The energy crisis in 2022 as well as the blackout event in Spain in 2025 revealed the vital role of hydropower to help ensure a safe supply of electricity in Europe during critical periods. The extension and upgrading of existing hydropower plants, together with the construction of new pumped-storage power plants, has become more attractive in Europe.
