Podero enables utilities to unlock next generation energy products
VIENNA, AUSTRIA – October 8, 2025 – Podero, the integrated device flexibility platform, enables utilities to transform their growing fleets of residential Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), such as electric vehicles, heat pumps, and batteries, into flexible, monetizable assets, creating new revenue streams while accelerating the transition to a world full of abundant clean energy.
Energy grids face unprecedented challenges from the rise of intermittent renewables and the rapid electrification of homes and transport. This volatility puts pressure on utilities, already navigating lower margins and increased competition. Equally, launching a flex proposition is challenging; consumers are unfamiliar and a smart go-to-market strategy is key for commercial success. Podero can help steer, trade and scale.
"The energy transition is happening in our homes, as millions of EVs, heat pumps and PV systems connect to the grid. We’re demonstrating that this isn’t a challenge, but a significant growth opportunity for energy retailers." said Chris Bernkopf, CEO and co-founder of Podero. "Our platform helps utilities turn volatility into value, by building exciting new flex propositions on top of our systems. Value from optimized consumption, new trading opportunities - and improved retention across their dynamic and fixed base. We're building a resilient, decarbonized grid, one home at a time."
Comprehensive platform capabilities
Podero's platform addresses multiple utility pain points simultaneously:
Steer: Podero connects and steers EVs and chargers, PV inverters and batteries, and heat pumps from top brands, optimizing devices based on spot prices, PV generation, and trading signals. Supercharging efficiency, without compromising on comfort.
Trade: Enables day-ahead and intraday spot trading, building up to balancing energy markets, with aggregated fleet optimisation
Scale: Podero brings a breadth of expertise to build the business case, integrate with key billing and servicing systems, and co-design products that consumers actually want
The platform can deliver over 25% savings for end customers through a range of use cases.
Extensive OEM compatibility
Podero’s flexibility layer connects seamlessly to a growing ecosystem of device manufacturers. The platform already supports 50+ OEM integrations, covering heat pumps, inverters, EV chargers and battery systems from brands such as Tesla, Huawei, Vaillant, among others.
Each integration is maintained through secure, cloud-to-cloud APIs, enabling instant onboarding of new devices. This ensures utilities can launch scalable, brand-agnostic programs that work with their existing customer base.
Proven success across multiple markets
Podero-enabled products are already live in multiple markets, with notable success stories including E.ON Sweden's Smart Heating product and oekostrom Austria's award-winning smartSparen tariff. E.ON Sweden deployed the first 100% cloud-to-cloud API-based smart heating product in their market, while oekostrom's smartSparen was recognized in the "Today for Future Awards” in 2024 and featured in national television campaigns.
"We are seeing rapidly increasing volatility in electricity markets and new competitors. Utilities must innovate to offer products that help customers save costs and give them control over their energy usage," said Tobias Övall, Manager Digitalization and Transformation at E.ON Nordics.
Backed by leading climate-tech investors
Podero's platform development and market expansion are backed by a €5.5 million seed round raised in early 2025. The round was led by Planet A Ventures, a prominent climate-focused fund, with participation from Systemiq Capital, Pale Blue Dot, and Push Ventures, demonstrating strong investor confidence in both Podero's climate impact mission and commercial viability.
"Podero is a pivotal player in the transition to a more flexible and resilient energy grid," pointed out a representative from Planet A Ventures. "Their unique software offers a vital solution for utilities to manage volatility and create new value."
