HYSTORE Project to showcase innovative Thermal Energy Storage Solutions at ENLIT Europe 2025
Pioneering Thermal Energy Storage Innovation HYSTORE is developing and validating an innovative set of thermal energy storage (TES) concepts based on cutting-edge technological components. The project features four novel solutions designed to transform how we store and manage energy in buildings:
● An all-in-one phase change material (PCM) solution
● A low-temperature PCM heating and cooling solution
● A PCM heating solution
● A thermochemical material (TCM) heating and cooling solution
These advanced concepts offer versatile applications in heating, cooling, and domestic hot water (DHW) configurations, enabling optimal conditions for hybrid energy and power services through a smart aggregator and an open-source multi-service platform.
Breakthrough TCM Technology
At the heart of HYSTORE's innovation is a patented thermochemical material (TCM) solution by Sorption Technologies, featuring enhanced heat and mass transfer capabilities. This unique condensation/evaporation design delivers faster and more uniform thermal exchange with shorter cycle times, improved system responsiveness, and a compact, cost-effective layout using plate heat exchangers. The result is significantly higher energy efficiency compared to conventional systems with easy integration and no licensing restrictions.
Four Real-World Demonstration Sites
HYSTORE is validating its technologies across four diverse European use cases:
● Dublin: TCM heating & cooling with smart platform for a campus serving 30,000 people, enabling higher renewable energy usage, peak shaving, and balance management
● Stockholm: PCM heating solution with smart platform for peak shaving, shifting, and demand-side management across residential districts
● Montserrat: Combined TCM and low-temperature PCM solutions with smart platform for a 10-building complex with 2.5 MWth district heating and cooling capacity
● Langenwang: PCM all-in-one solution for mixed residential/industrial areas with peak shaving and demand-side management capabilities
Expected Game-Changing Results
● 150% increase in energy density
● 50% reduction in CAPEX compared to state-of-the-art systems
● Plug-and-play installation reducing deployment time by 50%
● 70% reduction in design time through use-case guidelines
● At least 15% energy cost savings on bills
● 20% peak load reduction with optimized storage and heat pumps
● Storage density exceeding 70 kWh/m³ (cooling) and 100 kWh/m³ (heating), representing a 25% improvement over current solutions
● Seamless connection with grid-level aggregators serving single buildings and local energy communities
