Sustainability at Enlit

 Subpage Hero

Once a year, we bring our community together, for 3 days and in-person, to Connect, Inspire and Evolve and move the energy transition forward.

As event organisers, we recognise that this brings great responsibility in doing our part to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the impact of climate change in everything we do.

Read below about what we have been working on. And stay tuned for more, we are always working on expanding our sustainability initiatives.

Our Host City: Frankfurt

Frankfurt is a truly green city, with approximately half of the city’s urban area being natural, and with some 80% of Frankfurt’s inhabitants having a green space within no more than 300 metres from their front door.

With a great network of sustainable partners within the events industry, Frankfurt and the Greater Area provide ideal preconditions for sustainable events.

Besides a big focus on sustainability certification of event venues. the local hotel industry is also doing its part in conserving the environment through its responsible use of natural resources.

Our Venue: Messe Frankfurt

When sourcing event venues, we look for venues that match our purpose of delivering clean, affordable and reliable energy for all. Here are some examples of why we think Frankfurt Messe is on the right track:

  • Three photovoltaic systems – harvesting more than 2 GWh of electricity – including 5,300 solar modules on the roof of Hall 12 where part of the Enlit Europe exhibition takes place.
  • 100% green energy - since the beginning of 2020, they have completely converted the stand, hall and site power supply to green electricity. This eliminates an estimated 19,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
  • Climate-neutral mobility - there are 22 charging stations on the exhibition grounds and on the Rebstock multi-storey car park for customers and for Messe Frankfurt service vehicles with 34 more stations being added throughout 2022.
  • Efficient recycling management - an estimated 90% of stand construction and other exhibition waste is fed back into the material cycle. For example, carpet goods are shredded and converted into plastic pellets, waste paper is incorporated as the raw material for paper production and wood is used both for the production of new chipboard and as fuel at the Flörsheim/Wicker bio-power plant.

Our Partners and Suppliers

From choosing a city and venue to travel and accommodation, production & waste and logistics, freight and food. At Enlit we are working closely with our partners towards a common goal of net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.

A prime example is our stand builder 4FOREVERYTHING:
At 4FOREVERYTHING  we strive to leave a positive impact on our clients and our projects, WITHOUT leaving a negative impact on the planet.

Your Attendee Journey

  • Hotels - Our official accommodation partner B network offers not only discounted rates, but also has an ecological filter, where you can see what the certification is of hotels and also use the carbon footprint calculator.

  • Public transport – With the Deutsche Bahn Event Ticket, passengers travel on long-distance trains powered by 100% renewable energy and therefore bring about a sustainable reduction in CO2 emissions from travel to the event.s
    • Click here for the DB Event Ticket only valid within Germany.
    • Click here for regular tickets from Europe to Germany.
    • Download the DB Event Ticket tutorial.
  • E-scooters & E-bikes - Frankfurt offers various options for E-scooters and E-bikes as an alternative to travel.
  • Shuttles - Messe Frankfurt is in the process of making its shuttle service electric. For this year’s Enlit we made a decision to use the current shuttle service as this is a more sustainable option than having to use heating and lighting within the building for large areas that would need to be used when navigating on foot.

  • Food & beverage – The focal point of the products used by Enlit Europe 2022’s caterer accente is fresh seasonal produce from the region (preferably organically grown), if possible, or fair trade and organic farming products. accente is located on the fairground, which does not just mean that meals are freshly prepared and served on-site. It also means that the transport routes are as short as possible.

Our Pledge as part of Clarion Events

The organisation behind Enlit, Clarion Events, has signed the pledge and is a Silver Sponsor of ‘The Net Zero Carbon Events' initiative, which aims to bring together a wide range of industry stakeholders to jointly work on our industry’s commitment to tackle climate change and drive towards net zero by 2050.

In pursuit of this aim, Clarion Events undertakes to:

  1. Before the end of 2023, publish the organisation’s pathway to achieve net zero by 2050 at the latest, with an interim target in line with the Paris Agreement’s requirement to reduce global GHG emissions by 50% by 2030.
  2. Collaborate with partners, suppliers and customers to drive change across the value chain.
  3. Measure and track our Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions according to industry best practices.
  4. Report on our progress at least every two years.
