The Enel Green Hydrogen Challenge

Disruptive H2 production technologies toward green hydrogen competitiveness

Enel is committed to supporting the achievement of the target for the cost of green hydrogen at less than $2/kg by 2030.

From a technological point of view, this requires a drastic reduction in the costs of hydrogen production technologies and an equally important increase in efficiency and reliability, among others.

Enel strongly believes that the achievement of such objectives is feasible only through a collaborative approach by creating a direct link between technological expertise in hydrogen production and those related to market needs, integration with renewables, and grid needs (services).

Enel has an ambitious development plan for green hydrogen and has a strong commitment to scout the best companies that share the same market objectives and the same roadmap to achieve them. Enel is looking for disruptive technologies for green hydrogen production able to contribute to the achievement of the expected competitiveness.

The Seeker must submit its proposal and in particular its roadmap, from today to 2030, of the product development.

Your Application

The submitted proposal should include the following deliverables:

  • Technical description of the technology and current level of development: actual size, test carried out, technology patents registered or under registration and any other additional information that could be useful to characterize the product.
  • Product Roadmap: foreseen product sizes and time to market.
  • Capital cost roadmap and detailed strategy to achieve it. In particular, the Seeker must provide, as quantitatively as possible, the expected impact on target cost of:
    • R&D: which Innovation/improvement in R&D are you planning for your technology and how they will contribute to the cost reduction?
    • System design: Which kind of optimization are you thinking for system design (e.g. Increase module size, Balance of Plant optimization, supply chain…) and how do you plan to implement them (e.g. roadmap for stack/module size scale up,...)? How do they contribute to the total cost reduction?
    • Manufacturing scale and process automation: what is your target of production/year and how does this impact the final cost? How do you plan to scale up? By your own/in collaboration with external partners?
  • Electrical energy consumption: which is the foreseen energy consumption (kWh/kg_H2) of the technology? Indicate the actual and the expected consumption by2030, possibly separating DC (only stack) and AC (whole system) consumption. How does the innovation in the R&D impact the efficiency and the target declared?
  • Lifetime: declare the targeted operating hours by 2030 and possibly today's test results (laboratory/field test). How do you plan to achieve this targeted number?
  • Materials: provide evidence about the actual and foreseen use of critical raw materials (gr/W) by 2030. Are you planning to reduce the amount of critical raw materials or minimize the life-cycle environmental footprint of your technology (e.g. circularity by design of materials, innovative production processes, …)?
  • Integration with Renewable Energy Sources (“RES”): describe the dynamic behavior of your technology, considering a possible direct coupling with RES like solar or wind. Possibly provide the following parameters:
    • Operational range [%Nominal Load]
    • Cold stand-by to full production (time) [sec]
    • Hot stand-by to full production (time) [sec]
    • Load variation [%/sec]
